Education in Bangladesh :
Though the government pays high subsidy in educational sector, the adult literacy is still less than 50% in Bangladesh. Among this, male are more than 50% and female are less than 40%. There are many primary, secondary and higher secondary schools directly operated by the The government. It also subsidizes parts of the funding for many private schools. In the tertiary education sector, the government also funds more than 15 state universities through the “University Grants Commission”.
Educational Systems :
The three main educational systems in Bangladesh are
ñ General education system
ñ Madrasah education system
ñ Technical – vocational education system
Each of these are divided into four levels :
ñ Primary level (years 1 to 5)
ñ Secondary level (years 6 to 10)
ñ Higher secondary level (years 11 to 12)
ñ Tertiary level
The primary language for educating is Bangla in general, but there are exceptions in the English-medium institutions and Madrasahs. In primary and secondary level, students are taught Bangla and English language, Mathematics, general science, religion and few other subjects. Students are to choose a discipline (Science, Arts or Commerce ) in the year 9 but still continues the general subjects. In the higher secondary level, students study deeper of their discipline. In the tertiary level, students study in depth in a variety of subjects for four years and get their undergraduate degree. The tertiary education takes place at 34 governmental and 54 private universities.
Their is a difference between the “English version” and “English medium” school. The English version schools offer the same syllabus as Bangla version but in English. The English-medium schools / colleges offer syllabus from the UK or the USA.
The “Madrasah” educational system mainly focuses on religious education. The students of Madrasahs are taught the ways of Islam, rules and regulations, the history of Islam, etc.. The students at Madrasahs are also taught the general education subjects. Many Madrasahs educate orphans for free and provide them with free residence, food, clothing and all.
There is also an educational system called the “Quomi Madrasahs”. Currently there are few students being educated in Quomi Madrasahs. They are only taught all about Islam. They don't follow the general educational system and don't include the general subjects which Madrasahs do.
